Sunderland 0-0 QPR

Redknapp: Watchful eye

Harry Redknapp's first game in charge of Queens Park Rangers ended in a goalless draw against fellow strugglers Sunderland.

With all the goings on at QPR over the last few days you can imagine the players were just happy to be out on the pitch and getting the Harry Redknapp era underway at the Stadium of Light.

The Premier League basement boys actually started quite well and Adel Taarabt was very lively as he looked to create chances early on.

However, as would be the case for much of the night, at both ends, there were never enough supporting runners to really trouble either defence.

Djibril Cisse came closest for the visitors as he, after being set up by Taarabt, fired a low shot towards the far corner that Simon Mignolet had to push round the post.

Sunderland, also in a poor run of form, looked short of confidence all night and their plight was summed up by Steven Fletcher's attempted finish when one on one with Julio Cesar, he fired straight at the keeper.

Both managers made changes in a poor second half but neither side could really take control of the game.

Sunderland perhaps came closest to taking all three points away from a rain-soaked night on Wearside when Fletcher rose unmarked to head goalwards but substitute keeper Rob Green, on for the injured Cesar, reacted superbly to get a strong palm on the ball to keep it out.

The point does neither side any favours with both clubs continuing to struggle near the wrong end of the Premier League table. For QPR, at least the Redknapp era is underway at Loftus Road.
