The 30-year-old midfielder joined Marseille on a season-long loan on transfer deadline day, although he has yet to feature in Ligue 1 for Elie Baup's side this season due to a 12-match ban.

Redknapp has been appointed as the successor to Mark Hughes, who was sacked this week for failing to win any of the Hoops' opening 12 games in the Premier League.

Whether or not the wily tactician is willing the throw Barton a lifeline is immaterial, as the player has no desire to return to Loftus Road.

"When I went to QPR it was a choice dictated by money," Barton told the Mirror. "I didn't like what I had done and I swore I'd never do that again.

"It was the first time in my life that I had taken a decision for money. I did it because my partner was due to give birth - but I did not feel good about it.

"The more money you have, the more problems you have. When I was in prison I got £7 a week, and that was simpler - you'd use the £7 to buy food and that was it."

The former Manchester and Newcastle hardman will finally make his league bow for Les Phoceens on Sunday against Lille after his lengthy suspension came to an end.

Barton is relishing a return to domestic action, having already made four appearances for the club in the Europa League, scoring one goal in the process.

"I'm in good shape. I've worked really, really hard but it'll take four-to-six games before I'm 100 per cent," he told the club's official website.
