The defending champions made a bright start at Manuel Ruiz de Lopera Stadium but Sami Khedira steered an early chance wide after good work from Cristiano Ronaldo.

Manchester City target Benat put Betis ahead after 17 minutes when he skipped past Khedira to drive a 20-yard shot past Iker Casillas into the far corner. The goal came against the run of play and Madrid continued to press after going behind.

Angel Di Maria saw a shot deflected onto the crossbar before Karim Benzema's goal from a Xabi Alonso free-kick was incorrectly ruled out for offside.

Jose Mourinho made two changes at half-time and the substitutes almost paid off as Kaka forced a save out of Adrian from 25 yards before a later chance from another Alonso free-kick snuck wide of the near post.

Betis almost doubled their lead on 71 minutes when Salva Sevilla fired over from inside the box after a well-worked free-kick.

Adrian made a fine double save late on to deny a Ronaldo free-kick and Benzema's close range header with Madrid desperately seeking an equaliser.

Mourinho's side, who had one five successive La Liga games going into the match, never found the decisive breakthrough and ended their run of nine league games without defeat.

The Spanish champions stay third in the table, eight points behind Barcelona who have a game in hand, while Betis climb above Levante into fifth.
