The game ebbed and flowed in the early periods before the Baggies went ahead on the half hour. It was Zoltan Gera who took the ball 30 yards out and caressed a wonderful left-footed strike into the top corner.

And suddenly It was 2-0 to West Brom before half-time, as Shane Long took advantage of a mistake by Simon Mignolet. The Sunderland keeper failed to control a simple bouncing ball and the Baggies man was rewarded for his persistence when he nipped in to take it from his grasp and put it into the empty net.

The game burst into life in the second half and the Black Cats got one back on 73 minutes through Craig Gardner's deflected free-kick before Steve Clarke's Albion won a penalty eight minutes later.

Liam Ridgewell went down under a tackle from Adam Johnson and the referee pointed to the spot, despite what was a clear dive from the defender. Romelu Lukaku scored the penalty but Martin O'Neill's got back into it on 87 minutes as Stephane Sessegnon blasted in from close range after Boaz Myhill could only parry a header from a corner.

The match was put beyond doubt in the final minute of injury-time as West Brom broke and Lukaku turned provider, doing well to feed Marc-Antoine Fortune, who finished coolly.
