Nigel Adkins' side recorded a morale-boosting 3-1 win at Queens Park Rangers in their most recent league game to put light between themselves and the rock-bottom west Londoners.

The Saints, in 19th position, are now within three points of 16th-placed Wigan and are close to full strength, but Frazer Richardson is out with a thigh problem while Richard Chaplow is also expected to miss out.

Meanwhile, the Magpies have lost their two most recent league matches and have won only one of six games in all competitions.

Hatem Ben Arfa will miss the match for the Toon after suffering a hamstring injury against Maritimo in a Europa League tie on Thursday that ended 1-1.

Yohan Cabaye's groin injury rules him out, while Fabricio misses the final match of a three-game ban, but good news for boss Alan Pardew on the return to his former employers is that striker Papiss Cisse be back in contention.
