The Dutchman spent three years at Stamford Bridge and went on to play under Benitez at Liverpool in the 2005/06 season, but has never held a coaching position.
Zenden is said to be on his way to west London to meet up with the Spaniard before his official unveiling as the new Blues boss on Thursday afternoon.
Benitez has only been appointed until the end of the campaign, and it's expected that the 36-year-old will join on the same terms.
"He was approached on Wednesday by Benitez and is now on a flight," Zenden's father told Voetbal International.
"Since yesterday, he phoned Benitez many times. I assume that he will be on the pitch this afternoon, together with the manager. I assume he will finish the season, just like Benitez."
