Stephan El Shaarawy opened the Rossoneri's account before the Belgians had Bram Nuytinck sent off. A wonder strike from Philippe Mexes and an Alexandre Pato injury-time strike ensured Milan qualified for the last 16 with a game to spare.

And despite their relatively smooth progress in Group C, Allegri was not satisfied with his side's performance and is under no illusions to the fact that they must improve if they are to challenge the likes of Real Madrid, Barcelona and Manchester United for European glory.

"We have to improve, especially on the European stage, but we are playing with the right spirit. We have to remain calmer at times," said the 45-year-old.

"For example, when we were 11 against 10, we should have kept our poise and waited for the right moment to hit again, not switch off like we did. It could have been very dangerous.

"We scored two goals, but suddenly we stopped playing and they brought the game to life despite being down to 10 men. Fortunately, we managed to score another in the end."

The seven-times European Cup winners clash with Juventus in a mouthwatering Serie A encounter on Sunday.
