The Gunners sealed their progression to the knockout phase of the competition after beating Montpellier 2-0 at the Emirates on Wednesday, their second goal coming after a brilliant one-two between Olivier Giroud and Lukas Podolski resulted in the seasoned German international striking a sweet volley into the roof of the net.
But Wilshere believes his side under-performed and need to play at a consistently high level to compete with the giants of the European game.
"The first half was hard - we were sloppy, we gave ball away and weren't ourselves so needed to come and get an early goal," he told Sky Sports.
"We have to step it up. Tonight wasn't good enough, especially in the first half.
"We've got to play the best teams to win it so it doesn't matter who we get (in the last 16)."
