On 12 minutes Pedro had a golden chance as he got in behind the Spartak defence, but his volleyed attempt was well saved by Andriy Dikan.

Only two minutes later, a nicely played corner routine at the other end saw Dmitri Jombarov blasting over from a good position inside the area.

However, with 16 minutes gone Barca went ahead as Lionel Messi caused panic in the Spartak area. He laid the ball off to Dani Alves, who hit it on the half-volley from 20 yards out into the bottom corner of the home goal.

Marek Suchy missed another great chance for the hosts on 22 minutes when he skied an effort over from inside the area when the goal was gaping but the visitors then got a second through Messi with 27 minutes on the clock.

Home goalkeeper Dikan did well to save an Andres Iniesta effort but the Argentine striker followed it up to find the bottom corner with his right foot.

The Blaugrana dominated possession and with 39 minutes gone it looked ominous for the hosts as Messi got his second of the game in simple fashion, latching onto a through-ball and rounding the keeper to slot it home with ease.

Tito Vilanova's side took their foot off the gas in the second half but still had a couple of great chances to extend their lead.

Cesc Fabregas spurned an opportunity on 55 minutes - Dikan pulling off a fabulous save - before Pedro headed straight at the Spartak keeper two minutes later when found by Messi in acres of space in the box.

On 82 minutes Messi got free and rounded the shot-stopper yet again but was prevented getting his hat-trick by Suchy, however, it mattered for little as the game had been wrapped up in the first half.
