Tottenham forward Clint Dempsey has been named the best US footballer for 2012, winning the accolade for a third time.

The 29-year-old first scooped US Soccer's Male Athlete of the Year award in 2007 during his debut season with former team Fulham and received the honour again last year after impressing for both club and country.
The USA international, who moved across London from Craven Cottage to White Hart Lane in the off-season, has been recognised by his peers for a second successive year.
Dempsey netted six times for the Stars and Stripes and scored another 16 club goals in the past 12 months, with 14 of those coming for the Cottagers during the second half of last term, while he has found the back of the net twice for Spurs.
