He joined the American outfit in the off-season for a reported £1million, but has revealed his desire to return to the Premier League on a short-term loan after his new team failed to make the MLS finals.
The 32-year-old spent eight years at the Merseyside club and is hoping to be welcomed back by manager David Moyes.
Fellow MLS player, Landon Donovan, has had two similar loan spells with the Toffees, and Cahill is hopeful for a similar deal.
"With my move, the main thing is that I get to enjoy the MLS, but I also get the chance of going back to the Premier League and playing in the best league in the world," he told ESPN.
"It would be nice, but it is not down to me. I have to respect that sometimes the ship has sailed, but I know I have a lot more to offer."
