The Premier League champions failed to qualify for the competition's knockout stages last year, and they are in danger of repeating that unwanted feat this season after taking just two points from their opening four games to leave them bottom of Group D.
Mancini knows his side need a miracle in their remaining two matches against Real Madrid and Borussia Dortmund, but was pragmatic about City's chances of making the Last 16.
However, the Italian believes the Citizens could go on to triumph in the Europa League should they manage to finish third in their Champions League group.
"We don't have any chance to go through to the next stage but, like goalkeepers, football is strange," he told The Sun. "We have two games and we want to be in the Europa League.
"Maybe when you play in February, March, April it can be a problem but if you can reach the final, the Europa League is an important trophy."
