The 27-year-old sustained the nasty injury in a freak collision with Reds winger Raheem Sterling during the first half of the Premier League encounter at Anfield on Saturday.

The signs seemed slightly encouraging after Watson refused to leave the field on a stretcher, instead being assisted off by two of the Latics' medical team.

Martinez concedes the former Crystal Palace player's absence will come as a blow, and is awaiting tests before deciding if he needs to go under the knife.

"It is a broken leg and we are going to miss him," said the Spanish tactician after the game.

"He has a fracture and we are going to assess him now because maybe he will require surgery."

Watson has featured in eight of the Lancashire outfit's 12 top-flight fixtures this season, finding the back of the net once.
