The hosts dominated possession in the first-half but couldn't find a way through the Villa defence until just before the interval when Silva scrambled home from close range. Villa failed to clear a Samir Nasri corner and Tevez managed to divert the ball into the path of Silva, who poked the ball beyond Brad Guzan.

The reigning champions doubled their lead within 10 minutes of the restart from the penalty spot when Andreas Weimann was adjudged to have handled the ball from a Nasri corner. The Villa man didn't appear to make contact with the ball.

Nevertheless, the spot kick was awarded and Aguero coolly slotted the ball into the corner to double the hosts' advantage.

City were handed another penalty in similar fashion on 65 minutes when Barry Bannan was deemed to have handled the ball, again following a corner.

Aguero allowed Tevez to take over penalty taking duties and the Argentine sent Guzan the wrong way to give his side an unassailable lead.

Moments later City were four ahead as Aguero fired the ball home following a swift counter-attack. Tevez wrapped up the win on 74 minutes as he was on hand to tap in Nasri's cross across the face of goal.

The scoreline may have flattered Manchester City, but there can be no denying they deserved the win against a Villa side who offered very little going forward.
