Giroud: Took aim for Gunners

Arsenal thrashed ten-man Tottenham 5-2 in an enthralling North London derby at the Emirates Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

The Gunners went behind after ten minutes when Jermain Defoe's shot was turned into the path of Emmanuel Adebayor, who notched his third goal against his former club.

But it was to be a disappointing end to the afternoon for the lanky striker as he was shown a straight red card by Howard Webb eight minutes later for a high, studs-up challenge on Santi Cazorla.

The sending off provided a turning point in the game for Arsenal, who fully benefited from the extra man. Per Mertesacker equalised on 24 minutes with a powerful header from Theo Walcott's cross while goals from Lukas Podolski and Olivier Giroud gave the Gunners a comfortable lead before half-time.

Cazorla added a fourth Arsenal goal on the hour mark after a quick counter attack but Spurs pulled a goal back when Gareth Bale netted a fine solo effort. The visitors almost reduced the deficit to just one goal moments later but that was as close as they came and Walcott put the final nail in the coffin in with a neat injury-time finish.

The defeat is Spurs' fourth in a row in the Premier League which sees them slip behind Arsenal in the table, although they will wonder if they could have held onto their early lead with 11 men.
