The Manchester United boss saw Wayne Rooney pick up a knock in the 3-2 win at Aston Villa on Saturday, which led to the striker's withdrawal from the England squad for their midweek friendly against Sweden.

Ferguson is now facing the possibility of losing Van Persie too after the 29-year-old sustained a thigh strain on Monday, leaving the Scot with just two fit frontmen in Javier Hernandez and Danny Welbeck ahead of Saturday's Premier League tie at Carrow Road.

The double injury blow comes at a crucial time for the Red Devils, who lead local rivals Manchester City by two points at the top of the standings ahead of a congested fixture list which sees them play four matches in the space of 11 days.

Van Persie has featured in every league outing for United since his £24million move from Arsenal in August, scoring eight goals in 10 appearances this season, while Rooney has started the last five games after returning from a month on the sidelines with a thigh injury.

Oranje coach Louis van Gaal has bought in Wolfsburg forward Bas Dost as a replacement for the former Gunners captain, while Klaas-Jan Huntelaar is expected to get the nod to start up front against the Germans.
