Heavy rains had made conditions at the stadium almost unplayable, but the referee had been happy to get the match under way.

Galacticos superstar Cristiano Ronaldo had put the Primera Liga champions ahead in the first-half, taking advantage of a weak clearance to thump his volley home past the goalkeeper.

The second-half proved a frantic affair, with Juanlu threatening for the hosts from long-range while Pepe headed onto the woodwork at the other end, while Sergio Ramos' back-heel from just a few feet out from goal got bogged down in the wet and failed to cross the line.

Just after the hour mark the hosts drew level, Angel Rodriguez getting to Obafemi Martins' flick ahead of Pepe before guiding the ball past Casillas.

Jose Mourinho's men were then gifted the chance to regain the lead as Navarro was brought down inside the area, but Xabi Alonso's penalty was hit straight down the middle and at the goalkeeper, who made an easy save.

However, up-and-comer Morata, who had barely been on the field more than 60 seconds, got on the end of Alonso's free-kick to head home and snatch all three points for his side.

The result left Madrid third in the standings, eight points off leaders Barcelona, who had thrashed Mallorca 4-2 earlier the same day .

Los Granotes, meanwhile, finished the day sixth in the standings with 17 points from their opening 11 La Liga matches.
