Unbeaten Barca recorded their 10th victory in 11 matches, stretching their lead at the top of the table to six points over Atletico Madrid.

They did not have it all their own way in the match, however, as poor defence at the start of the second half saw them concede two quick goals, allowing Mallorca to get back to 3-2.

Barca took the lead on 28 minutes at Mallorca's Iberostar stadium when Xavi got the better of goalkeeper Dudu Aouate with a beautiful free kick.

Messi then scored his first of the match in the 44th minute to make it 2-0 when a low-hit shot squirmed past Aouate.

A minute later it was 3-0 when Cristian Tello cut in from the left and curled into the far corner.

In the second half, however, Mallorca's tenacity was rewarded when Michael Pereira smashed it past Victor Valdes after Javier Mascherano surrendered possession on the right.

Sergio Busquets handled in the penalty area only two minutes later and Victor Casadesus made no mistake with the ensuing penalty.

The home fans sensed an unlikely comeback, but Messi was to work his magic once more, grabbing his 20th goal of the season. Alexis Sanchez chested the ball down to the lurking Messi just inside the box, and the Argentinean maestro controlled the ball before slamming it into the top corner.

From then on, Barcelona held on to their lead, with the fight draining out of Mallorca, to cement their position at the top of La Liga.
