Franck Ribery believes the two-year ban handed out to France team-mate Yann M'Vila was over the top and claims a fine would have sufficed.

Rennes midfielder M'Vila was punished by the French Football Federation for breaking curfew when he and four Under-21 players visited a Parisian nightclub just days prior to a crunch European Championship play-off clash with Norway in October.

M'Baye Niang, Antoine Griezmann, Chris Mavinga and Wissam Ben Yedder were all suspended for the remainder of the year, while M'Vila copped an additional 12 months, and Ribery feels the FFF came down too hard on the 22-year-old, who has been capped 22 times by Les Bleus.

"I think the punishment is severe," said the Bayern Munich star. "This is not the best way to help a player back to his best level.

"Sure he deserved a penalty, but rather a fine. Suspend until 2014, is frankly exaggerated."

M'Vila, who was an off-season target for both Arsenal and Tottenham, has previously served a one-game international ban after he refused to shake Olivier Giroud's hand when he was replaced by the Gunners striker against Spain.
