The home side were always on top in the opening periods as Gareth Bale and Defoe both had efforts saved before they went ahead on 21 minutes.

Bale put in a curling cross that Defoe steered into the far corner of the goal to give them a lead they deserved for being massively on top.

However, on 40 minutes it all went wrong for Spurs. Kyle Naughton played a dangerous back-pass that Hugo Lloris tried to take around the onrushing Robert Beric.

But the keeper's attempts ricocheted off the Maribor man and nestled in the net to ensure the teams went in level at half-time. Spurs dominated the second half and re-took the lead on 49 minutes, as Defoe latched onto a ball from Thomas Carroll to smash it in from just inside the area.

Emmanuel Adebayor missed a good chance on 57 minutes, hitting wide when clean through on goal, but Defoe wrapped the game up with 76 minutes on the clock.

A great flowing team move ended with Bale knocking the ball across the area for Defoe to slot it home and secure his well-deserved hat-trick.
