The match ebbed and flowed throughout with both teams committed to attack, particularly in a pulsating first half.

But a draw was a fair result and it leaves Alan Pardew's side in pole position to qualify for the knockout stages of the competition.

Newcastle started the match brightly but were rocked by two quick-fire Club Brugge goals, the first coming in the 14th minute when Ivan Trickovski showed some sweet skill to control the ball before sliding his shot past Tim Krul.

Five minutes later the Belgian side doubled their advantage when Jesper Jorgensen drilled a low shot past Krul, although the Newcastle goalkeeper should really have done much better.

Newcastle contrived to miss a golden chance to halve the deficit midway through the first period when Gabriel Obertan crossed for Sylvain Marveaux, who somehow missed the ball from five yards out with the goal at his mercy.

It looked as though Newcastle would be going into the break two goals behind before they scored twice in two minutes to bring the scores level. Out of nothing, Vurnon Anita showed great technique to slam a 30-yard thunderbolt past Bojan Jorgacevic before Sammy Ameobi set up his brother Shola to toe-poke the visitors level.

The pace of the game continued to be frenetic after the break and Newcastle went closest to grabbing a winner when substitute Yohan Cabaye hit his free-kick against the woodwork.
