Alan had given the home side the lead from the penalty spot before a power failure resulted in an unexpected 15-minute break for both teams.
The intermission seem to have allowed Sir Alex Ferguson's side time to regroup as they resumed action with all guns blazing.
Robin van Persie, Wayne Rooney and Javier Hernandez conspired in the last ten minutes of time to inflict a cruel defeat on the Portuguese side and secure their qualification to the knockout phase of Europe's premier club competition.
Smalling, having made his first appearance of the season after recovering from a broken metatarsal, said the unexpected stoppage benefited United.
"Yes, I think it did in a way," he said.
"Especially after their goal. We knew we really had to pick ourselves up.
"We had a lot of the ball but we weren't really getting anywhere. So yes, it really helped us."
Smalling last played in May and when asked about his return, the 22-year-old added: "It's been so long and it's been frustrating watching from the sidelines.
"But it's good to be able to come in and come back with a win as well so I'm feeling happy."
