The Red Devils scored three late goals to cancel out a 49th minute Alan penalty and qualify for the last-16 round.

Robin Van Persie lobbed goalkeeper Beto for the equaliser, before Rooney slammed home a penalty ahead of Javier Hernandez's goalmouth tap-in at the death.

But having needed to come from behind, Rooney believes United must go on and improve their consistency with a good run of results.

"There have been games this season where we've been fantastic and there have been games where we've had to grind out results," Rooney told Sky Sports.

"Tonight we had a difficult night and we weren't at our best but we won the game and that's all we can ask.

"We've topped the group and that's the main thing. We're happy with that.

"We're in a good position and we know we can play better football. Now we have a run of games where we feel we can get maximum points, so hopefully we can do that."

United, meanwhile, are sweating on injuries to Jonny Evans and Nani, with both players substituted in the midweek win.

Assistant manager Mike Phelan told the club's official website: "Jonny felt his groin a little bit - I think it probably happened during the penalty incident. As a precaution we took him off quickly.

"With Nani I think it was probably just a lack of games and his hamstring started to tighten up, so we weren't taking any chances with that."
