The German champions arrived in Madrid in superb form and having produced a sensational display at the Etihad as they somehow failed to beat Manchester City were always going to make it tough for Jose Mourinho's side.

Dormund started brightly and it was no surprise to see them take the lead on the half hour mark.

Robert Lewandowski flicked on for the rapid Marco Reus, who unleashed a stunning half volley that Iker Casillas couldn't keep out at the near post.

The lead lasted just six minutes as Madrid produced a stirring response and Ozil's cross was met powerfully by Pepe at the far post, Roman Weidenfeller only able to help it in off the underside of the bar.

The Borussians continued to threaten on the counter-attack and were ahead again right on the stroke of half time as Mario Gotze burst into the box and Alvaro Arbeloa's challenge could only help the midfielder's effort loop over Casillas to silence the Bernabeu.

Cristiano Ronaldo was out of sorts all night and for much of the second half it looked like Dortmund were going to take all three points away from the Spanish capital.

However, as the fourth official marched out with his board to indicate the amount of added time to be played at the end of 90 minutes, Jose Callejon was fouled just outside the box.

Ozil then took everyone, including Weidenfeller, by surprise and clipped the ball delicately over the wall and in off the inside of the near post.

The draw leaves Dortmund at the top of Group D but Madrid will certainly feel that they can end matchday six on top of the group with both sides facing Manchester City and Ajax in their last two fixtures.
