The Wales international was replaced during Saturday's 2-1 defeat to Manchester United, and it has now been revealed he has suffered a groin strain, which should rule him out for two weeks. This gives Theo Walcott an opportunity to start.

However, Gervinho, Tomas Rosicky, Abou Diaby and Wojcech Szczezny remain long-term casualties, while Kieran Gibbs and Alex-Oxlade Chamberlain are both highly doubtful but are likely to return in next weekend's Premier League clash with Fulham.

The Gunners need a win to get their campaign back on track and reclaim their lead at the top of Group B. Plus, they really need a confidence boost after a torrid two weeks.

Schalke, meanwhile, are coming off the back of a shock 3-2 defeat to Hoffenheim at the weekend but before that claimed major scalps in the form of Borussia Dortmund and Arsenal, whom they beat 2-0 in the previous matchday fixture at the Emirates.

The Gelsenkirchen outfit are likely to be without Kyriakos Papadopoulos, who suffered a head injury rendering him unable to header the ball in training.

Meanwhile, Christoph Metzelder and Julian Draxler remain long-term casualties.

Schalke coach Huub Stevens is likely to continue to keep everyone guessing as to who his goalkeeper will be. Stevens has rotated the trio of Lars Unnerstall, Timo Hildebrand and Ralf Fahrmann between the sticks thus far this season.
