The Dutchman returned to haunt his former employers as he fired the Red Devils into a third-minute lead at Old Trafford on Saturday, while Patrice Evra ensured Santi Cazorla's injury-time strike would prove only a consolation.
Van Persie, who left the London club for Manchester at the end of last season, felt his new club should have won by a more convincing score-line, but admits he was delighted to have helped his side claim all three points.
"It was a special day but in the end it was about the game," Van Persie told Sky Sports 1HD.
"I think we played well. We were a bit sloppy with chances and should have scored a few more but in the end I'm happy with the three points."
Van Persie refused to celebrate his goal, which came following a fluffed clearance from Thomas Vermaelen, and he says he felt no need to disrespect his former supporters.
"I think it [the subdued celebration] speaks for itself," added Van Persie.
"I played for eight years and had a fantastic time there. I respect the fans, the players, the manager and the whole club.
"It's the first time ever that I've played against my former club because I only have three. It was a special day but in the end it's about the game and we won it."
