The former Arsenal captain was always going to struggle for game time in the centre of the park for Barca with Xavi playing some of the best football of his career, and as a result, has been used as a "false nine" more regularly by boss Tito Vilanova.

And with Xavi still just 32 years of age, it may be some time before the former Arsenal captain is first choice in Catalonia.

Fabregas told El Periodico de Catalunya: "I see myself as a replacement for Xavi because my beginnings as a player were in the same position.

"I was pushed forward by circumstances. I believe that there will never be another Xavi.

"I am finding myself more and more [as a false nine]. With Tito, I have almost always played [inside]. He thinks I can improve in this aspect."
