Also taking over the captaincy duties in the absence of Iker Casillas, Torres notched up his 100th cap in the 5-0 hammering of Saudi Arabia.

He now becomes the fourth Spaniard to achieve the impressive milestone along with Casillas, Xavi and Xabi Alonso.

With Carles Puyol (99) and Sergio Ramos (94) also closing in on three figures for El Roja, Torres believes the feat should be celebrated as a hallmark of the current world and European champions' legacy.

"It's a day I'm never going to forget," the 28-year-old forward told rfef.es.

"The number of players reaching the 100 club says a lot about the national team in recent years and, fortunately, there are many players who will pass 100 games, and younger ones like Cesc (Fabregas) and Ramos.

"We need to be proud about that, it's a team that's been together many years and that makes it is easier to achieve things. I think it's a privilege to be here with these companions."
