The former Liverpool striker had previously played for the France Under-21 national team, but will now seemingly be turning out in the colours of the Indomitable Lions.

Akono revealed he had made the agreement on a trip to Europe as he looks to rebuild the Cameroon national team following their recent struggles.

"I was lucky to travel to England with the father of the Bolton Wanderers player David N'Gog and he agreed to do everything to switch over to join our national team," Akono told Reuters.

"He will apply to FIFA to grant him permission to switch his nationality to Cameroon. I must express my gratitude to his father for his assistance. If everything goes to planned, he should join the Indomitable Lions very quickly."

Akono also revealed that Tottenham Hotspur defender Benoit Assou-Ekotto agreed to end his Cameroon exile and is set to play for his country for the first time in two years in a friendly next month.

"After explaining that I have restored order within the national team since I took over, Assou-Ekotto agreed to rejoin the Lions," Akono added. "I am counting on these key players to reinforce the national team to ensure that we qualify for Brazil. That is my main task now."
