The former Zimbabwe international had been training with Ajax Cape Town earlier in the week and it has come as a surprise to see him join their cross-town rivals Chippa.
The 34-year old's deal is until the end of the season and includes the option to extend his stay for another 12 months.
Chilli Boys owner Siviwe 'Chippa' Mpengesi was delighted to have pulled off such a coup, saying Benjani will bring much more to the club than just goals.
"We signed him for the season with an additional one year option," Mpengesi told The New Age. "We certainly hope that he will work for us and also rub off his wealth of experience on the young strikers that we have.
"I am serious about building the team and when we struggled to get Moussa Maazou and Benjani became available, we had to take the opportunity."
Chippa United Head of Communication Lukanyo Mzinzi heralded the signing, saying that Benjani's experience will be crucial in their bid for survival.
"The issue of goals is very important in the fight we are in," he told Eye Witness News. "Everybody knows the team is not in a good position in the league.
"One would not like to be there and I think the goal scoring ability will come in handy because of his international experience upfront."
