The Team of Choice meet the University of Pretoria in a last-32 encounter at the Tuks Stadium on Saturday night, with kick-off scheduled for 20:15.
Maritzburg have not been in good form of late, both leading up to the Christmas break and since the continuation of the league a fortnight ago; it is thanks to their good early season that the KZN side are still up in fifth spot in the league table.
Since beating Moroka Swallows back in November, Maritzburg have lost five and drawn two of their seven matches.
One of those draws was a 0-0 stalemate with Tuks up in Pretoria. The two sides also drew 1-1 during their first-round league encounter, making this a hard game to call.
"The Nedbank Cup is a good point for us to turn our season around,' Team of Choice captain Shu-aib Walters told SuperSport.com.
"I think we have been a little bit unlucky, even against Free State Stars [a 1-0 league defeat].
"However, the guys are still motivated and they are fighting, which is good for us, and we're definitely looking to get a positive result," he added.
The University side have also seen a good start to their league campaign tapering off somewhat, having only won once of their last 10 matches.
They can at least look to their feats of 2009 for inspiration, when they went all the way to the Nedbank Cup final while still in the First Division, beating Ajax, Bloemfontein Celtic and Kaizer Chiefs on the way.
