Gor were held to a goalless draw at home by Seychelles side Anse Reunion while Tusker thrashed St.Michel from the same island 4-1.
The second-leg takes place in Seychelles in just two weeks and Onyango knows they have to score to advance.
"It was a sad day for us because we lost the chance to win the game. The red card obviously had an effect on how we played and that was the game changer," he said.
"However, we had our chances too and could have scored a goal or two. That though, is now in the past and we have to look forward.
"Next time we will be restored back to 11 men and will do our best and I am confident we will go through. If this game showed anything it is that our quality is good because we harassed them even with 10 men. I am hopeful that all is not lost and we will prevail," he said.
"If they (Tusker) can win, we can too. The huge nature of the score (4-1) shows that we are able to win there too if we prepare well. Congratulations to them and I hope we can do the same."
