The Carthage Eagles came third in Group D after losing 3-0 to Ivory Coast and drawing 1-1 with Togo.

They beat arch-rivals Algeria in their first match but bowed out as Togo had a better goal difference.

The results prompted Trabelsi to resign from the 2004 Africa Cup winners.

Just last year Tunisia made it to the quarter-finals in Gabon/Equatorial Guinea where they lost 2-1 to Ghana.

Maaloul is the former coach of Esperance ST, one of the biggest Tunisian clubs who he led too the 2012 CAF Champions League final where they lost to Egyptian giants Al-Ahly.

Tunisia are first in Group B of the 2014 World Cup qualifiers with six points and Maaloul's first test will be against second-placed Sierra Leone.

Equatorial Guinea and Cape Verde are the other group competitors with one and zero point respectively.
