The Stallions maestro had been instrumental in helping the side book their place in Sunday's final, but was unable to continue that form as Nigeria clinched the title with a 1-0 victory at the National Stadium.

Pitroipa's achievement should, however, help ease the country's disappointment at missing out on the crown, with the personal accolade a just reward following a spectacular tournament from the Burkinabes.

The Rennes playmaker had actually been in danger of missing out this weekend's showpiece encounter after he saw red in the semi-final against Ghana, although the Tunisian referee quickly admitted an error in sending him off and CAF soon rescinded the decision.

Meanwhile, Nigeria's star striker Emmanuel Emenike took home the Golden Boot following his four goals at the tournament, while compatriot Victor Moses picked up the Fair Play honour.

Tunisian forward Youssef Msakni also had something to cheer about at the end of the African spectacular, earning the Goal of the Tournament for his last-gasp winner against Algeria in their Group D clash.
