Ghana faced Mali to fight it out for 3rd place at this year's tournament at the Nelson Madela Bay stadium on Saturday night, a repeat of the 3rd-place play-off at last year's tournament.
It was deja vu for the Black Stars, as the Eagles downed them once again to take the third spot. The final score 3-1.
The Black Stars were touted as favourites for this year's tournament, but were not convincing as they started off with a draw against the DR Congo. They did however bounce back to beat Mali 1-0 and then clobbering Niger 3-0.
In the quarter-final they faced AFCON debutants Cape Verde, and even though they were unconvincing, they managed to win 2-0.
In the semi-final, Ghana suffered defeat at the hands of underdogs Burkina Faso via a penalty shootout, setting up the play-off against Mali.
Despite their poor showing, Appiah believes the team did well to get as far as they did.
"When you are building a team, I mean a national team, it takes time to be 100 percent sure," he said. "I would say the players have done so well by getting to the semi-finals.
"I don't expect that when you are building a team, you can suddenly think you can win everything. I personally believe that they have done so well."
Ghana find themselves in the FIFA 2014 World Cup Group D containing Sudan, Zambia and Lesotho. They occupy second place with three points and face group leaders Sudan next.
