Drogba and his current Elephants team-mates have been dubbed "the Golden Generation" of Ivorian footballers, although the squad have been unable to live up to that billing after again failing to lay their hands on the continent's biggest title.

And with the Galatasaray striker just one-month away from his 35th birthday, he admits his AFCON dream has sadly come to an end.

A clearly distraught Drogba simply stated: "It's over."

There was heartbreak all over the Royal Bafokeng Stadium for the Ivory Coast players, most notably defender Souleman Bamba, who deflected Sunday Mba's shot past his own goalkeeper to hand the Super Eagles a 2-1 win.

"It is heartbreaking," Bamba said. "We were the strong favourite, but unfortunately we didn't manage to do what we wanted to do, to win this competition.

"The start of the second-half was very good, we've scored an equaliser, but for some reason we didn't manage to make more goals and that's the big disappointment."
