South Africa meet the Eagles at the Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban with kick-off at 20:30. McCarthy, who was part of the Bafana team that lost 2-0 against the West Africans in the same stage of the 2002 edition, says it is payback time.
"Hopefully they will go out and walk Mali. They beat us in 2002 when they hosted the tournament and that day [February 3, 2002] they changed the kick-off time from 17:00 to 13:00. It was 45 degrees when we played and that's the only way they beat us because we struggled in the heat," McCarthy recalled to Football411.
"Now it is payback time and I hope we will give them a hell of a payback."
Bafana's all-time leading goal scorer of all time with 31 goals added he has been impressed with the way Gordon Igesund's men have responded to fierce criticism prior to the continental showpiece.
"It is nice to see the way they have responded to critics. They have been slammed very badly and they have showed character to prove people wrong," the Orlando Pirates striker told this site.
"Also, it was important to restore the pride for the country. Now they are giving the people what the people deserve and that is taking Bafana to the top five or 10 in Africa. We shouldn't be where we are at the moment; we have the best facilities, the best league and we must be up there among the best," McCarthy added.
