The draw had initially been enough to see the Copper Bullets through, but Nigeria's 2-0 victory over Ethiopia in the night's other game meant it would be Burkina Faso through as group winners, joined in the last-eight by the Super Eagles.

The Burkinabes threatened right from the off after winning a free-kick in a dangerous area, and an awkward bounce right in front of goal saw Kennedy Mweene palm back into the danger area, but the ball was just out of reach of Jonathan Pitroipa and the defence was able to hoof clear.

The opening minutes of the game were hampered by two forced changes, one to each side, with Burkina Faso's Alain Traore and Zambia's Davies Nkausu both having to leave the field of play with seemingly serious injuries.

After 17 minutes the defending champions should have taken the lead as Chisamba Lungu intercepted a weak clearance before sliding the ball across the area where it was dummied for Collins Mbesuma, but with the whole goal to aim for he could only fire his first-time shot straight at the keeper.

Paul Put's men looked dangerous at times, and Pitroipa created a good chance after breaking down the wing and playing a nice one-two to received the ball back inside the area, but he was travelling too fast for the pass and lost control when in a really promising area.

Emmanuel Mayuka got himself into a great position inside the area shortly after the restart to get onto the end of a low ball, but his touch was a terrible one and the ball carried on through to the goalkeeper.

Zambia began dominating possession in the game but relied too heavily on aerial balls, which the frontmen were unable to make the most of due to the height of the Burkina Faso back-four.

Jonathan Pitroipa had a golden chance to snatch the win right at the death but he was just unable to get a toe on a ball across the face of goal, with Mweene gathering the loose ball.

However, the minnows managed to hold on for the famous result, which put them through to the next round as winners of Group C.
