The West African nation is currently in the midst of war, with government and French forces battling rebel insurgents in the north.
Keita wore a t-shirt with the words "Peace for Mali" embossed on it when he collected his man-of-the-match award after his side's first match of the tournament and he has spoken in recent days about his desire to see peace restored.
With rebels on the retreat and Mali through to the next round, Keita admitted his delight.
"Our country is in one of the most difficult moments of its history," he said. "And our qualification will bring joy to the people. I am very proud."
The experienced striker won domestic and European titles during his time with Barcelona and so is no stranger to silverware. However, the thought of adding to his medal collection is not a driving force for him right now.
"I won everything in football, I won all the titles,'' he said. "Today the only thing I want is to bring joy to my country. You cannot imagine how happy I am to be here.''
