An early Dieumerci Mbokani penalty for the Congolese put them in the driving seat for qualification for the next round.

But an equaliser in the 14th minute from Mahamadou Samassa put Mali back into the runner-up position in Group B.

It was a lightning start for the Leopards, who raced up the field as soon as the referee got the match underway. LuaLua had the first shot of the game, as he lashed a screamer against the upright in the opening seconds of the match.

There was drama soon after when Mohamed Sissoke brought down Yves Ilunga just inside the penalty area.

Mbokani made no mistake from the spot and put the ball in the top right-hand corner to give the goalkeeper no chance of making a save.

DR Congo were in the ascendancy thereafter, but some good work by left-back Adama Tamboura getting into the box gave Samassa an easy tap-in at the far post.

The rest of the match was a fairly timid affair as both sides refused to give any ground in the midfield, essentially cancelling each other out.

There were further chances for either side to win the match - particularly in the end when Seydou Keita was denied by the right boot of Robert Kidiaba - but neither got the breakthrough they wanted.

Mali will now face tournament hosts South Africa in the knockout stages at the Moses Mahbida Stadium on Saturday.
