Keita has led the line for the national team since making his debut in 2000 and is currently taking part in his fifth Africa Cup of Nations.
Having left Barcelona last year to play for Dalian Aerbin in China, it would appear that the 33-year-old's career may be winding down.
However, regardless of how many more games he has left in his legs, Keita does not lack motivation.
"If I look at how many million Malians are watching us on TV and we are giving joy to them, this is something that really pleases me," explained the striker.
"I am honoured that I can inspire all of them and that is very satisfying."
This is true no more so than at present with Mali gripped by war.
"Compared to what is happening back home, there is nothing I can do because we are football players and not politicians. We are just happy to be playing and bringing satisfaction to Mali," he added.
Progression into the quarter-finals will certainly provide reason to cheer for the people of Mali.
A draw may be enough for the Eagles to secure a spot in the last eight, but coach Patrice Carteron reveals his team will be going for the win against DR Congo on Monday night.
"It's a very tight group. DRC has an excellent team, so it's not a question of doing calculations. We just have to go in and win the game," asserted the Frenchman.
Keita remains confident that his side have a lot more to give at the Africa Cup of Nations and will make no decision on his international future until the competition is over.
"Our destiny is in our own hands and are not in such a negative position," he mused. "We are confident we can still go forward. I would like to first focus on giving my all until the end of this competition.
"Time will then tell if I am there in the future. No one is eternal and everlasting, there will be a time when I will have to call time on my career."
