Platini: Can he lead the islanders to victory?

Platini: Can he lead the islanders to victory?

The African Cup debutants Cape Verde have not disgraced themselves but Angola, the 2010 African Cup of Nations hosts, have disappointed.

The islanders have as good a chance as South Africa and Morocco to get to the next round, but a win is obligatory.

These minnows held a nervy SA to a 0-0 draw in front of a partisan crowd and then scored first against Morocco in their second match that ended 1-1.

Without a doubt they are getting better with each game and if this trend continues then victory is on the cards for the Blue Sharks.

Ryan Mendes, Luis Platini and Julio Tavarez are now known quantities after showing their speed and skill against their Group A opponents and will no doubt be marked men when they face the Angolans.

The Black Antelopes were satisfactory against Morocco in their first game, a side they have never beaten. But against a stimulated SA they struggled to get forward and to make an impact.

Manucho, their top scorer, was not as effective as expected and against SA he was restrained by an effective central pairing which Cape Verde too has.

Wingers Campos Djalma and Mateus do provide the threat on the flanks if allowed to play, as against SA they just started attacking too late and this was their downfall.

There is no doubt the Blue Sharks have noted their weaknesses and vice versa, so after all the scrutiny it will come down to who wants it more.

This match kicks off at 7pm at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium in Port Elizabeth.
