The Indomitable Lions were denied their place at this year's AFCON finals after losing on aggregate to minnows Cape Verde in their final qualifier last year.
The missed chance followed on from their failure to make the 2012 showpiece in Equatorial Guinea and Gabon, and Akono knows the importance of leading the side to football's biggest stage.
"It is imperative for us to qualify for the World Cup. Every necessary means should be put in place for us to achieve that," Akono said at a press conference.
