Bafana Bafana and Cape Verde played out a goalless draw in their Group A game on Saturday which was also the opening game of the AFCON.

The Blue Sharks, tournament debutants, celebrated the point in a game which will be remembered as the first ever draw in an opening AFCON match.

Mamelodi Sundowns' Katlego Mpela (50 caps), Crystal Palace midfielder Kagisho Dikgacoi (51), Kaizer Chiefs players Siboniso Gaxa (54), Itumeleng Khune (51) and Bernard Parker (50) were rewarded by SAFA President Kirsten Nematandani for their service on Sunday.

"On behalf of SAFA, I would like to say congratulations to these five players and many more that have walked this path. This is a very important milestone and not many get to reach it, and for that all five of you need to be proud of your achievements," said Nematandani.

"Your role in this current Bafana Bafana squad is very crucial in that you are the foundation of this team, and the young ones can learn from you. And to those who are still travelling this road, what we see today shows it can be done only if you put your mind to it."

Group A is wide open after Morocco and Angola also played to a goalless draw, leaving all four teams on a point each.
