Angola v Morocco: A timid affair

The two sides took to the same field on which host nation Bafana Bafana and Cape Verde had played out a goalless draw just hours earlier in the tournament curtain raiser.

However, the Black Antelopes and the Lions of the Atlas were unable to give South Africa the opening goal of the tournament as both sides failed to find the back of the net.

Morocco made a quick start to the match and immediately put Angola on the back foot. It was the Black Antelopes who had the first chance, however, as Mingo Bile sprung free on the right, but his shot failed to trouble goalkeeper Nadir Lamyaghri.

Oussama Assaidi repeatedly found space down the left-hand side and was central to the Moroccan counter-attacks. The West Africans took complete control of the encounter and limited the opposition to hopeful long-balls from the back.

The southern Africans started the second half on the front foot as they kept possession much better than the first period.

Morocco goalkeeper Lamyaghri failed to collect the ball after a cross into the box, but Guilherme's toe poke sent the ball agonisingly wide of the far post.

Younes Belhanda's introduction in the 63rd minute failed to produce the attacking flair it had promised, as Angola continued to put the Lions to the sword.

Angola piled on the pressure in the final minutes of the match, pinning the Moroccans inside their penalty area, but ultimately failed to convert their chances.

The result leaves all four teams in the group level on one point each, with the next round of Group A matches set to take place on Wednesday.
