The Black Stars were tournament favourites last year but were knocked out by eventual champions Zambia and Pele says there is no doubt they are favoured again to lift the continental title, especially after morale-boosting wins against Egypt and Tunisia.

The West Africans are in Group B with Mali, Niger and the Democratic Republic of Congo.

"Football on the continent is not easy these days, the fact that Cameroon and Egypt didn't qualify tells a lot," Pele told Metro TV in Accra, Ghana.

"The coach has done his homework, and the technical men have made their choices. They have won a couple of friendly matches and have given the country a lot of hope and confidence so we are keeping our fingers crossed hoping it goes well for them."

"We should be careful and attach a lot of seriousness to the matches and with the talents in camp, I am sure they will make an impact," said the three-time BBC African footballer of the year.

The Black Stars start their AFCON quest with a game against Congo at the Nelson Mandela Stadium on Sunday, kick-off is at 5pm.
