Yeye, who was 14 years old when Bafana won the tournament on home soil, said South Africa winning the title 16 years ago was a big inspiration for young aspiring footballers.
"After we won the tournament, somehow I took football even more seriously because I also wanted to one day play in the AFCON so it was a motivation," he told Football411.
"So now, together with the other 22 players in the team, we have an opportunity to also write ourselves in the history books. I believe we have a good enough team to go on and emulate the class of '96. I hope we will make the nation proud."
The Kaizer Chiefs midfielder further said the fact that 11 of the 23 men in Gordon Igesund's squad were part of the 2010 World Cup campaign could also be vital at this year's continental showpiece.
"We will obviously have a lot of support at home, but it is also important that some of the guys in the team have the experience of playing in a big tournament," he said.
"So I think that experience, even though we got out in the first round, could be crucial now.
"I believe we have a good team that can go all the way."
