The north Africans are in Group D with last year's losing finalists Ivory Coast, as well as Togo, but it is this clash that is the most important according to the striker who netted six times at the 2012 AFCON.

"To start off well in the competition, we have to win this first match. A win against Algeria will give us confidence and will be good for our morale.

"Our group is very tight and all the teams could qualify," said the former Esperance player.

"I hope we will be psychologically and physically present, in order to go as far as possible," he said of a team who made it to the quarterfinals in 2006, 2008 and 2012.

This will be the 28-year old striker's fifth AFCON appearance since debuting at the 2006 version in Egypt.

The Carthage Eagles play their first two matches at the Royal Bafokeng Stadium in Rustenburg and finish off the group stage in Nelspruit against Togo.
