Msakni scored twice at the 2012 AFCON finals in Gabon and Equatorial Guinea, the first goal helping the Carthage Eagles beat bitter rivals Morocco.
Tunisia were able to make it out of the group stages, but were eliminated in the quarter-finals by Ghana.
This time around, Tunisia have been grouped with the Ivory Coast, Algeria and Togo, and are going to have to be at their best to make it out of a very tough group.
In this respect, the 22-year-old attacking midfielder could be a key player for the 2004 champions.
Msakni recently joined Qatari side Lekhwiya (on record Arab transfer deal - a four-year contract worth up to $15 million), having previously played for Tunisian champions Esperance, where he was touted as the next big thing in the country's footballing hierarchy.
Lekhwiya apparently had to hold off interest from several big European clubs to get their man.
"We were very interested in him and we were intent on buying him as we were convinced that he will be a major asset to the team on the pitch," said Lekhwiya sporting director Ahmed Abbassi.
It is believed there is a clause in Msakni's contract that will allow for a move to Europe, resulting in him being linked with Paris Saint-Germain, who are owned by the Qatari Investment Authority, the organisation thought to also have interests in Lekhwiya
"Youssef was contacted by Paris St Germain through me. I think in six months, one year or more, Msakni should go to Paris," Msakni's former Esperance coach Nabil Maaloul told the BBC.
"There are great coaches and great players in Qatar, and the championship there may enable him to improve."
