Player to Watch: Alain Traore

Alain Traore made a name for himself in the French Ligue 1 while playing for Auxerre last season. He is blessed with pace and dribbling skills. He was a key player during his seven-year stay at AJA. Traore now turns out for FC Lorient, where he moved in the off-season after Auxerre were relegated to Ligue 2. The 23-year-old has scored four goals in five appearances for his new club and 12 in 26 appearances for the Burkinabe, proof that he is a proven goalscorer for club and country.

Rising Star: Germain Sanou

Young goalkeepers always have a harder time getting noticed than outfield players, but Germain Sanou had no such problems. Although he has yet to prove himself at club level, the 20-year-old got called up to the national team at the age of 18, and was in the squad for the 2010 and 2012 Cup of Nations. Even though Sanou is very highly rated within the Burkina Faso camp, he will probably not feature during the tournament, with Daouda Diakite and Abdoulaye Soulama ahead of him in the pecking order.

Sorely Missed: Mahamoudou Kere

Kere has been capped 46 times for the Burkina Faso national team. The central defender decided to retire from international football after a disappointing showing from the Stallions at the 2012 edition of the tournament. As the former captain, Kere's experience will be missed at the 2013 AFCON.
